Get Out Of Town

going outdoors after a breakup

Taking some time off immediately after the breakup is arguably one of the healthiest things you can do. Going through big changes in your life isn’t easy. And juggling office problems, your boss’ moods, and clients’ demands don’t sound beneficial at all.

That’s why you need time and space to think everything through. So pack your bags and get out of town. Here are a few ideas for you.

Go to a villa alone

If you’re one of those people who prefer to figure things out on their own, then probably traveling without a companion is the way to go.

When I was going through a breakup in my early 20s, I decided to rent a villa in the woods for the weekend and spend the whole time on my own. It actually helped me to digest what was going on. That’s why if you’re going through something similar, it’s best to go to a natural location and get all the information sorted out in your head.

Breathing the fresh air, walking around, cooking for yourself, sleeping in, and having all the time in the world to reflect on your life might be the perfect combination of little self-healing moments.

Go out of town with your best friends

On the other hand, keep in mind that you don’t have to go through it alone if you don’t want to. You can still get out of town and have some fun with your friends if this is what you need.

Get your girlfriends and go on a weekend getaway together. Tell yourself that you will cry over your last relationship once you come back and do your best to ignore every sad emotion that sneaks into your chest. Maybe that will help to shake things off your mind. Gossip with the girls, visit the nearest club, have some spa treatments, laugh, and enjoy the present moments.

Who knows, once you’re back, you might not feel the need to cry at all.

Visit your family

If you need emotional support and a change of scenery, the best way to go is to visit your family.

When was the last time you opened up to them? There’s no better time to do so. They’ll be happy to see you, and they might be able to provide you with the help you need at this moment.

Learn to Love Your Single Life

Okay, maybe you think that loving being single is impossible, but that is just because you haven’t healed yet. Once you are over your ex and you feel content with yourself, the real fun starts. And for that specific moment, I’ve created a free 30-day challenge that will keep you busy and self-entertained until the moment you love your single life comes. See the challenge for single ladies here.

Go No Contact With Him

going no contact after a breakup

Distance yourself from the relationship.

Your heart is still freshly wounded, and seeing or talking to him will only make things worse. So, the best way to get over your ex is to distance yourself from him and the relationship. But how can you do that? Here are some ideas.

Stop talking to him

Rule number one is to stop talking to him altogether. And no, you can’t “just check on him every once in a while”. I’m talking full-on ignorance.

Remember that you need to maintain some physical and emotional distance in order to heal. You can’t expect growth from the same person that brought you down in the first place. Delete his number and don’t look back. In a few of my previous breakups, I would ask one of my friends to just go into my phone and find and delete every photo I had with that person. I know it sounds extreme, and maybe I regret these decisions years later, but it helped me a lot in my lowest moments.

Throw away any reminders

You need to remove all the reminders of your ex.

Purge your apartment from all the things he gave you as gifts and his belongings. You can imagine how hard it might be to try and move on if you still have your ex’s picture on your nightstand. So take a large box, and throw away everything that reminds you of him.

Avoid places where you can see him

Try to avoid locations where you can bump into your ex.

Take this opportunity to explore new places on your own. Remember how we talked about building a relationship with yourself after a breakup? This is the perfect way to do so. Of course, this is not always possible. For example, if you’re coworkers, then it could be impossible to ignore him. But you get my point.

Ask for help

seeking help when recovring from a breakup

Don’t wait for the negative emotions to consume you. Even if you feel okay right after the breakup, that doesn’t mean that you’re not still in shock. It’s going to hit you eventually. That’s why you need to ask for help immediately after you two break up.

Talk to your friends and family

Your friends and family are the people you should trust the most.

After all, they just want what’s best for you. And you can rest assured that they’re on your side. So while it may be tempting to hole up in your bedroom and dive into self-pity, this is usually an unhealthy response to the situation. That’s why you need to reach out for help. Never underestimate the power of being surrounded by people who love you and support you.

Talk to a therapist

Although you might have people you trust close to you, it’s sometimes hard to open up fully. And I understand that more than anyone.

I love my friends, and I know that I can trust my family when it comes to validating my emotions, but that doesn’t mean I want to look vulnerable all the time. That’s why seeing a therapist might help with addressing any guilt and self-blame after a break.

It’s completely normal to feel angry and hurt after a breakup, and you need to express those emotions. But if you also find it challenging, it’s better to contact a professional, especially if you’re feeling depressed.

Help yourself

Finally, if you’re not ready to help yourself, nobody can make you feel better. You should be willing to accept the change and take care of your mental health.

As cheesy as it sounds, self-help books helped me go through one of the hardest moments of my life. Also, motivational podcasts and self-improvement TED talks made me feel less alone. You might want to try that out as well.
