How to Overcome the Fear of Being Alone Forever

Many women are crippled by the thought of never finding someone special. They dream of being in a healthy relationship with someone who values them. Instead, they keep finding toxic, manipulative, or disrespectful guys who can never make them happy.

And if you recognize yourself in that description above, you and I have a lot in common.

For years I battled my fear of being alone, and as a result, all I was doing was jumping from one toxic relationship into another without asking myself if the man I am with is indeed someone I will be happy with.

However, to find a quality guy, I had to let go of my fear of being single so that I could attract the right man instead of the toxic one. But how did I overcome that fear of staying single forever?

Years passed, and most of my friends were having their first children, and others were in serious relationships and planning weddings.

In this post, I will tell you all that there is about the fear of being alone.

What is the Fear of Being Alone?

IIn a nutshell, the fear of being alone translates to the fear of staying single forever.

A number of factors can provoke this. Perhaps you feel pressured by your social circle, where most of your friends are in long-term, committed relationships and are ready to move on to the next chapter of their lives. Or maybe you have experienced rejection in the past by someone you thought was “the one”. Now you don’t know how you’ll ever find someone as perfect as that person, which causes you great stress and anxiety.

For some people, the fear of being alone is caused by their lack of self-confidence. Because of the way they see themselves, they can’t believe that someone is capable of loving them, as they themselves don’t practice self-love.

The fear of being alone can also be caused by the person not knowing how to spend alone time. Maybe you just came out of a long relationship, which is why now you don’t know how to spend time on your own, given that all your prior activities were couple-related. You might find yourself craving the intimacy you once shared because you want to fall back in your comfort zone.

Whatever your own specific case is, one thing is for sure – the fear of being alone won’t lead you anywhere good. You need to find a way to overcome it and trust that you will attract exactly what you need by letting go and feeling comfortable in your own skin.

Here are 5 common fears that manifest by the fear of staying single forever and how to conquer them. Trust me – you will feel much better without these demons preying on your shoulders.

“I will never find love again”

This is one of the most common fears associated with staying single forever. It might feel as if there is (or was) only one person in the world who could completely love you 100% for who you are. The truth is that there isn’t a single soulmate for each and every one of us. This notion exists only in fairytales – in reality, there are plenty of suitable matches for you, which will find you when the right moment comes. Real love strikes when you least expect it, so take your time and don’t rush it. In the meantime…

Learn to love yourself. I know, I know, you probably heard this time and time again from all sorts of outlets, but no matter how naive it sounds, it’s true. Unless you can embrace your strengths and weaknesses and learn to love yourself for who you are, how do you expect someone else to accept you?

“I am too old – no one would ever want me anymore.”

This fear can manifest itself, especially if the majority of your close friends are in serious relationships and have moved on to the next stage of their lives. This reality can make you feel lonely and vulnerable as if you are falling behind in the “race” that many people perceive life to be. This, however, couldn’t be further from the truth.

People have different paces of going through life. Just because your friends are happy in their relationships doesn’t mean you shouldn’t also find happiness without one. Enjoying one’s own company is a skill that can take a long time to master, but once you do, you would be grateful that you put the time in to learn it. Also, circling back to the fear of being too old to find love – it just might be that your person is taking his time. Try to accept it in a positive way and work on bettering yourself for yourself, instead of adhering to some other person’s ideal of who you should be.

“I should give up. The next guy I find will probably be even worse than the last one.”

If you had a particularly bad experience in your last relationship, you might conclude that all men are trash, and you shouldn’t even bother with them. Instead of joining the man-hating camp, take a deep breath and steer away from dating for a while. If you spend some time realigning with yourself, you will discover that your vision is getting clearer, and you are more concise about what you want. By taking a step back, you can see the full picture instead of focusing on the details.

Try not to generalize men and hate on them collectively. Instead, accept them as human beings with their individual faults and flaws. This will make it easier to be objective about people and see them for who they are first and for their gender second. It might be difficult to do at first, but practice makes perfect – so whatever you do, don’t give up!

Do you really believe that, or are you just victimizing yourself and feeding your soul negative affirmations? Think about it – your life surely can’t be this bad if you take an objective look at it. You have your friends and family, your support circle that will never leave you and help aid you through difficult times. Just because you are feeling desperate right now, this doesn’t mean that life will stay the same forever. The best thing you can do is steer yourself away from this negative mindset and fight for your right to peace of mind.

One thing you can do is learn from your past experiences – who was at fault for how things turned out? Was it your poor choice in a partner or perhaps something of your own bouquet of personality traits? Reflections like this are often subjective but nevertheless can provide you with a good basis for what you want your future to look like.

“I will never have children”

It’s hard to stay positive when your biological clock is ticking away, and you are nowhere near pregnant. However, I can surprise you by telling you that the oldest verified mother to conceive naturally was 59 years old Dawn Brooke. And with today’s modern set of technology, conception is even easier than it was back in 1997 when Brooke got pregnant.

Instead of worrying about being prevented from being a mother, you can focus on staying fit and healthy, as this can better your chances of conceiving once you find your perfect match. My advice is to not ponder too much on this fear but instead put all your energy and effort into becoming the best possible version of yourself. When the time comes, your soulmate will surely find you – but remember to never settle for less just because you feel lonely!
