15 Qualitites of a Good Man in a Relationship

1. A good guy is emotionally mature

One of the best (some might even argue THE best) qualities of a good man is that he’s emotionally mature. But don’t take it for granted – most men aren’t as in touch with their emotions as they appear to be. In fact, most men are emotionally retarded.

You know that he’s a keeper when he’s not afraid to express vulnerability. Being emotionally mature needs a certain level of self-understanding. If your boo is emotionally mature, he would know how to best approach and cope with situations that might otherwise be trying or challenging.

However, if he’s often acting in a selfish and self-centered way, failing to meet your needs, then it means that it’s hard for him to balance his own emotions as well. Be careful with emotionally immature men; they might project their issues on you (trust me, I speak from experience).

2. He celebrates your achievements

If you want to make sure that your new love is a good quality man, then pay attention to if he’s supportive of you or not.

Here’s an example. Imagine you just started dating this guy, and it’s all going great, but he’s an accountant, and you’re an artist. He doesn’t really get your job, and he’s not a creative person at all. Then one day, you get an amazing offer for a long-term project, so you share the news with him. Is he equally excited as you about it, or does he undermine it?

If he celebrates your achievement despite the fact that he doesn’t understand it, then he’s a great guy, and you should do everything in your power to keep him.

3. He makes effort to get along with your friends and family

One of my previous boyfriends was a very odd guy. He was an introvert, he had few friends, and he was kind of socially awkward. But he was a good man. And what makes a good man in a relationship? Putting effort into getting along with your closest people, although he doesn’t necessarily enjoy spending time with them.

The guy I dated was exactly like that. My friends are outgoing and extroverted, and I could feel like he wasn’t always comfortable around them. But he never complained. Well, we didn’t last, but that’s a whole other story.

4. He’s protective over you

If you’ve ever wondered what to look for in a man when dating, then here’s the answer – he should be protective over you. And while overprotectiveness might be toxic, you should feel safe around him both physically and emotionally.

We all have flaws, but you know that you’ll have a successful relationship with a man then he understands your flows and helps you overcome them. You should feel safe to express your truest self without worrying if he’ll judge you for it. This brings us to our next point.

5. He is a quality man if doesn’t try to change you

Unfortunately, many times we fall in love with the idea of someone rather than the actual person. This results in unhealthy relationships, which are all rooted within our perception of what they should be. Even if we’ve struck the most beautiful, smart, and caring person, sometimes we don’t like them for them.

You know he’s a good man when he doesn’t try to change you. And you know you need to change your man when he judges you for the way you are. So run while you can.

6. He knows he has to put effort

Wonder which one of these qualities of a good man in a relationship is truly important? This one!

Here’s the thing!

Relationships require hard work from both sides. It all seems perfect during the honeymoon period, but you need to work for it when things start becoming serious.

Ask yourself those questions:

Does he take you on date nights?

Does he notice the little things?

Does he take care of you?

Are you his priority?

If you answered YES to all of them, then you’re in it for the long run. But if he doesn’t seem to put the effort now, when things are still fresh, imagine how hard it will be in the future.

7. He’s honest

Many could argue that honesty and communication are the building blocks of a healthy relationship. These are essential qualities of a man that you should look for when you first start dating. He should be honest about the positive and the negative things alike. He must be direct and transparent with his intentions, and he should be able to tell you the good and the bad.

For example, let’s say you’re dating a guy who feeds you with compliments all the time. When you ask for his opinion, he always agrees with you and never contradicts you. Do you think he’s completely honest? Because I don’t think so. Two people can’t agree on absolutely everything.

8. He’s confident

There’s nothing more attractive than a self-confident and self-aware man that knows what he wants. Confident men rarely second-guess themselves and their decisions and have the ability to make their partners feel safe. They’re loyal to themselves and the person they’re with.

Men who don’t have self-confidence are more likely to question themselves and those around them. So he would project his own insecurities on you, which might harm your relationship. So pay attention to his attitude towards his own self. This may determine if you’re going to last or not.

9. He’s kind

Unless you’re dating a complete prick, your boo has friends and family that he cares about. So notice how he behaves with them and if he’s kind to them in the most genuine way. Does he respond and react with empathy? Does he support them through an experience without judgment?

Also, other types of unkindness could determine if he’s a good man. Sometimes men are nice towards their friends but terrible to other people. You know what they say – judge a man by the way he behaves with the waiter

That’s an excellent metaphor, but I also mean this in a literal way.

For example, my friend Kelly was dating a guy named Chad, who had a healthy relationship with his parents and friends. One day they went for a weekend trip. Long story short, their hotel registration was messed up, and they ended up staying in a different room than the one they booked. Chat not only made a huge deal out of it, but he was incredibly disrespectful towards the hotel staff and basically ruined their whole weekend for nothing.

Watch out for guys that are being unnecessarily rude to staff members.

10. He has a good work-life balance

If there’s one thing I want you to remember after reading this article, it’s this – If he knows how to manage his time in a way that he has a good work-life balance, then you can trust him. Often men who achieve harmony between the personal and professional aspects of their life are more trustworthy and mature.

11. He makes compromises

Being able to step back when necessary is an important personality trait that any good man will have. Think about if he’s flexible with his time. Do you always have to do things according to his schedule, disregarding if you agree or not?

Also, here’s a tip – if you notice that your new love makes compromises, don’t make it seem like it’s unnoticed. Acknowledge the effort he puts in to make you happy. That way, you’ll create a more positive and balanced relationship.

12. He commits to his word

One of the most important qualities of a good guy is the commitment he has to his promises.

He should be able to live up to his personal guarantees. If he’s a good man, he knows that his reputation and your trust in him all depend on if he’s keeping his word.

Small promises like making the dinner reservation on time and walking the dog in the morning may not seem important but say a lot about what kind of man he is.

13. He is a quality man when he understands equality

If he’s a good man, he will respect your desires and interests. You should both have a say when it comes to deciding what you’ll do during the weekend, what you’ll order for dinner, and when to do the housework. These are just examples but pay attention to the small things.

The effort and work in the relationship are done by both, not one. Do you want a relationship where you feel genuinely cared about, without a doubt? Then make him understand that you want a partnership where you’re equal.

14. He has a purpose

A good man has a purpose. If your purpose is to start a family, it would be great if he shares your purpose.

However, for most men, their purpose is their career which is equally important. In this case, their family and relationship would fuel his professional aspirations. Look for his purpose early in the relationship in how he speaks about his career. What are his goals? Is he excited to develop professionally?

When it comes to his personal life, he should also know very clearly what he wants. Now, I’m not saying that you should start talking about having kids together from the very beginning. But try to find out what his opinion on the topic is. This way, you’ll also know if he has commitment issues or something you should probably worry about.

15. Faithful and loyal

Regardless if you share the same view about the future (which, don’t get me wrong, it’s super important), there’s one thing that you should both agree on in order to have a healthy relationship. Loyalty. A recent study revealed that around 60% of men cheat at least once in their lives. So it’s crucial to find out if he’s loyal when you first start dating.

Pay attention to how he behaves with other girls. Is he totally apathetic when he talks to them, or does he sometimes flirt? Faithfulness may be one of the most important characteristics when it comes to great men.
