What To Do When Your Boyfriend Cheats On You But You Still Love Him

When I was in high school, I got together with my first boyfriend, Chris. We dated for three months which when you’re 17 feels like a whole lifetime together. But while my love for him grew more and more every day, he started distancing himself from me. Eventually, I found out that he cheated on me with a girl from another school.

Needless to say, I was crushed. It took me over a year to get over him. Luckily, during my freshman year in college, I met Derek. We dated for seven months, and it was all going seemingly well…until I caught him in bed with his ex.

After that, I felt like there was a sign on my forehead saying, “Cheat on me, please!” At some point, I even blamed myself. Am I unlovable? Am I not enough? Why do all these men keep being unfaithful? Are all men such jerks

Well, after a few other interactions with cheating men and based on my experience, I finally know how to deal with unfaithful guys. If you’re reading this article, chances are you’re going through a similar situation.

So what to do when your boyfriend cheats on you, but you still love him? How do you recover from such betrayal? In the next few paragraphs, you’ll find out the answer to these questions.

Why do guys cheat even if they love you?

When we love someone, we don’t want to cause pain to that person. So do cheating men really love their women? Or are they in the relationship for selfish reasons? Here are the most common reasons why guys cheat on their girlfriends even if they love them.

They find cheating to be exciting

Many cheating men are excited by the thrill of potentially being caught. Doing something wrong makes what they’re doing more enticing, and it seems to be something that they can’t get enough of. But if your boyfriend is cheating on you and finds the act of keeping it secret exciting, he might not really love you.

Their intimate needs aren’t being met

People have their own sexual desires and needs. In many cases, women have a lower libido than men. So if his needs are not met, then he may start searching for that satisfaction elsewhere. Maybe he finds it easier to seek intimacy from other women instead of discussing his desires with you.

They have some type of addiction

Sex addictions are a real thing that can actually ruin people’s lives. One of my best friends’ boyfriends was obsessed with the thought of sleeping around. It’s a mental condition, and addicts usually feel a lot of shame but still be compelled to seek out intimacy wherever they can find it.

They’re afraid of commitment

Let’s be honest – most men are afraid of commitment. And on top of that, they’re usually emotionally unavailable. So the reason why he’s cheating on you might be his inability to express his emotional needs mixed with his fear of being in a relationship. But keep in mind that this does not excuse his behavior.

…Or maybe they’re just not in love

What if he keeps you around just because he doesn’t want to be alone? If he treats you like an option, then you should rethink your relationship. Does he love you, or does he just feel comfortable having you around?

Can a cheating man change and be faithful?

Have you heard the saying “once a cheater, always a cheater”? Do you think that’s true?

Well, according to some couple therapists, when we assume “once a cheater, always a cheater,” we deeply underestimate people’s ability to change. People who say a cheater can’t change have never felt the guilt that comes when you realize you’ve made a mistake by having an affair.

But there’s also another side of the coin. Before a cheater can change, they have to work through the issues that drove them to stray. So if the cheater isn’t willing to look deeper, they will never change. In that sense, it really depends on the person.

So, as much as you want to give your cheating boyfriend another chance, you should carefully analyze what this will do to your mental health and self-confidence. Is it worth it? If he cheats again (and the chances of that happening are big), will you be able to go over it? Can you give him another chance and hope he changes?

I don’t want to be an ambassador for the worst possible situation. I’m simply suggesting that you need to evaluate the situation before you jump to conclusions.

How do you deal with a cheating boyfriend that you love?

The first question you need to ask yourself is, “Do I really love him?”. Is he worth your time if he’s a cheater and doesn’t respect you and the relationship? So are you in love with the person, or are you sticking to the image of him that you have in your head?

In any case, getting over a cheating boyfriend isn’t easy. Regardless of whether you love him or not, getting cheated on can break you as a person. So you need to take care of yourself first. How do you recover from such a betrayal? Here’s what to do in order to deal with those negative emotions that come with cheating.

Learn to respect yourself

How do you expect someone else to love you unconditionally if you don’t love yourself? The same goes for respect. So can you be in a relationship where your partner doesn’t respect you? There’s only one person who can change the tone of your inner dialogue, and that person is you. Stop beating yourself up, quit the negative self-talk, and learn to respect yourself.

Rebuild your self-esteem

All people who got cheated on can agree on one thing – it really damages your self-esteem. However, you need to remember that you had nothing to do with the cheating, and it’s not your fault. Love yourself the way you are, and certainly, the right person will love you for you too. Take care of your mental health, reach out to people you love, and give yourself some time. Rebuilding your self-esteem isn’t going to be easy, but it’s absolutely necessary.

Discover what you want in your next relationship

Before you jump into another relationship or start repairing the one you already have, you need to be aware of what you want out of it. You should align your goal with your partner’s goals, and you have to make sure you’re on the same page. It’s okay to have criteria. In fact, it’s even necessary.

Make new friends

You shouldn’t feel alone in tough times. And yes, your current friends might be supportive, but you also need a change of scenery. Think of it as if a new chapter of your life begins. Get yourself out there, meet some new people and leave the past behind. And who knows, maybe someone better is waiting just around the corner.

Final Thoughts

It is all because we take t personally, isn’t it? Cheating isn’t about him sleeping with another woman, but about feeling that we aren’t enough for one person; we don’t fulfill his needs and expectations. And when he fulfills ours, and the feelings are strong, the pain is even bigger.

Yet, the one thing you should remember is that you are more than enough, and you aren’t entitled to fulfill anyone’s expectations of you. And to be honest, it is not about you at all. It’s about him being disrespectful and not caring about your feelings… yes, regardless of what he tells you.

So, wipe your tears, straighten your shoulders, lift your head and find someone who will respect you and love you just the way you are. He exists, trust me!

Save this for later

  1. I am a guy and did not cheat but my fiance thinks I did because I lied to her. I read this article it sounds a lot like things she is going through. What can I do to help with it. she shut off communication for about two weeks and now she does not text or call or answer them. I drop off presents to her for christmas and she has talked to me the last two days out of 8 days of dropping it off with a note each time. I want to make it better and make her feel loved.
