10 Powerful Gratitude Journaling Prompts To Change Your Life

The Power of Gratitude Journaling

I’ve talked about the benefits of a gratitude journal many times, but as I assume you’re new here, let me tell you a secret.

It’s secret many people briefly mention when talking about the power of gratitude, but I’m about to shout it out.

Gratitude is the Law of Attraction’s secret ingredient.

Nothing you manifest could become a reality unless you express gratitude for it (yes, before you have it).

That’s not all.

To me, Gratitude is life-saving, and it chased away my depression and loneliness back in 2016. I managed to manifest my fiance, build up my confidence and improve my belief in myself.

To sum it up, I use gratitude like people use salt when they cook – I add it to everything, and if I miss adding it, everything becomes tasteless and bland.

What are the benefits of a gratitude journal?

Gratitude makes you see what’s already in your life.

Benefits of gratitude

You know that saying, right? “We appreciate something after we lose it.”

Gratitude prevents you from making that mistake in your life.

How often did you lose something or someone and wished you could go back and spare a moment of merging into the moment and see the beauty of it?

Gratitude does exactly this.

It takes 5 minutes of your day but adds priceless value to your life.

Years ago, I used to live in a shared house (if you don’t know, a shared house is a place where you could rent one room only). The house was nice but cold. And we weren’t allowed to use extra heaters as the electricity bill would go too high. At that moment I realised that I never appreciated a warm room before. I was taking the heat for granted and didn’t notice its importance for me until I lost it.

Well, long story short – I got an extra heater and was hiding it under my pillow when I wasn’t home, just in case the landlord stopped by to check if we were cold enough! At that point, I started my first gratitude journal and trust me on this: I mentioned how grateful I am that the room is warm every single day while I was living there.

The greatest benefits of a gratitude journal are that you remember to be grateful for valuable things, events and people in our lives. Appreciating something in time could save you from separation with it.

How Do You Start a Gratitude Journal?

Gratitude Journaling Prompts

You’ve got many ways to start a gratitude journal.

Here’s what I did back in 2016.

I crafted it by myself. It was a sacred process with sacred meaning to me and wanted to personalise it as much as possible.

So, I took out 5 pieces of paper (A4) and folded each one of them in four. I cut out the pieces and put them together. Then, I just stapled one of the long sides so it would look like a mini-book. Simple as that.

A few months ago I got into junk journaling (if that’s a new word for you – junk journaling is creating journaling out of scrap papers, it’s fun and unique). Therefore, my last Gratitude journal is a huge book with many pieces of paper inside. A total mess, but I love it.

Why am I wasting your time here?

I guess, what I’m trying to say is this – it doesn’t matter how you start a gratitude journal – just start it. Handcraft it, get yourself a fancy agenda or a simple notebook. It doesn’t matter.

Just open the first page, write down the date and start your first sentence with: “Today I am grateful for…”

What should be in a gratitude journal? Gratitude Journaling Prompts and other simple no-rules

The power of gratitude

The rule is that there aren’t any rules… except maybe one: Keep the journal clean from negative thinking and self-destructive writing.

Your gratitude journal is going to be your temple for things that matter to you, touched your heart and left a trail in it. Nourish this temple and keep it pure.

I usually write one page a day, in the evening. This helps my mind to focus on the task and to search for more things to be grateful for actively.

I also start every page with “I am grateful for this day.” Over 136 000 people didn’t wake up this morning and they never will. I did. And I am grateful for it.

At the end of the page, I write: “I am grateful for everything that it happened, everything that is happening and everything that will happen in my life.” No matter what it was, every sorrow has brought me to a place of happiness. It doesn’t matter the hardships of my days. I know they will lead me to joyfulness.

10 Gratitude Journaling Prompts That Will Transform Your Life

1. In the form of gratitude explain one of the hardest learnt lessons in your life?

Here are some examples of how to start the sentences:

  • I am grateful I learnt …*
  • The hardest thing I learnt is that…. and I am grateful it happened.
  • It was hard that …. happened, but I am so grateful it did. I am grateful I learnt…

*Don’t feel obligated to follow my way of writing, make it unique. However, if you struggle how to start, these are simple suggestions to help you do it.

Be grateful prompts

2. What are the 10 things in your life that you cannot buy with money?

A powerful prompt to search for the real value in life. We often stress over stuff we cannot afford and ignore the things we cannot buy.

3. What are the top 3 good things that happened today?

  • I am grateful for…
  • The best thing that happened today was …., and I am so grateful about it.

If possible, take it a step further and write down what you learnt from these good things.

4. What was the hardest thing you had to go through today?

Some days are good… and some days are not so good. Write what was the hardest thing today in the form of gratitude it happened and it’s gone.

  • Today …. happened and I am grateful it did as I learnt…
  • …(whatever happened)… taught me that…(lesson)… and I am grateful for it.
  • I am grateful for… as it taught me…

5. What is the way you want to feel?

This is an actual manifestation technique. Writing down the way you want to feel and no the way actually feel is how you “invite” these feelings in your life.

  • I am grateful for being strong and holding my head up in this situation.
  • I am grateful for believing in myself and trusting my guts.
  • I am grateful for the power I have over my life.
  • I am grateful for the love I feel towards…
  • and so on.

6. Express gratitude for the good things that will happen tomorrow

Approcoating small things in life

Imagine the best possible scenario for tomorrow. What would it be? How would your day go? Express it in the form of deep gratitude.

  • I am so grateful that tomorrow I will finish work earlier/in time…
  • I am grateful for being successful in my presentation/project/work
  • I am grateful I won’t be rushing tomorrow morning, and everything will go smoothly.
  • I am grateful for the love I will experience tomorrow.
  • I am grateful that I will spend quality time with my husband/wife/children/family…

7. Express Gratitude For Achieving Your Dreams and Goals

Another manifestation on its way. What are your wildest dreams and biggest goals? Write them down and be thankful they happened.

  • I am grateful I got promoted to be… (be specific)
  • I am grateful I took my exams…(be specific)
  • I am grateful I moved to…
  • I am grateful I met a man/woman who loves me, supports me,… (manifest your dream partner if that’s something applicable to you)

8. Express Gratitude for The Power of Your Inner Belief in Yourself

Gratitude prompts for manifesting a better life

I know we already mentioned belief in yourself and so on, but here’s the thing.

Everything comes from your inner belief. Whatever you believe in – that will be.

Therefore, I want you to work on your self-trust harder at this point.

Express it in the form of gratitude and be thankful for every bit of it in your body. Be as ridiculous as possible and as brave as you can be – this is your life and your journal.

9. Express Gratitude for always choosing Love Over Fear

Always choose love over fear

Every choice in our life comes either from a place of love or a place of fear.

Fear is what stops us from success and it is often what keeps us down.

Choosing Love over fear means daily to inspect yourself and your choices.

Gently ask yourself how many of the choices you made today came from a place of love and how many from a place of fear. Be grateful for the ones you made from a place of Love. Express gratitude for noticing the choices you make from a place of fear.

If you need more guidance and information on this subject, I strongly recommend getting Spirit Junkies by Gabriel Bernstein. I am reading it now, and it’s an absolute treasure for you if you need guidance on how to choose Love every day.

10. Express your final gratitude for everything that it happened, everything that is happening and everything that will happen in your life

The last gratitude journaling prompt is just a suggestional. As mentioned, I use it to end my page after every journaling I do. It’s my way, to sum up, the things I forgot to write down, but I had to.

Final thoughts on Journaling for Gratitude

Don’t be scared to start.

Guess what!

No one is watching.

It’s just you and the paper.

Write down the first sentence and make yourself to write another two. Everything will fall into places after that. Just start transforming your life. Today.
