A while ago, I wrote about the five most important morning habits for couples who want to build a thriving relationship. But what about the evenings?
How do you and your partner spend your evenings?
Do you go to sleep together at the same time? Do you have an evening ritual that promotes quality time and making sure you give and receive love?
Here’s the deal!
You both work and most likely spend all day away from home, making sure you get those paychecks at the end of the month.
After a full day of dealing with stressful and demanding jobs and colleagues who play with your nerves like they are strings of a rusty guitar, and your boss who believes you have superpowers and your secret wish is to work overtime every day of your life… After such a day, the one thing you truly dream of is a few hours of silence, some food you didn’t cook, and a warm bed.
But then you also get the guilty feeling that your loved one needs you, and you need them. You love each other, and al is well on the weekends, but your evenings are anyway short and smell of extreme tiredness and grilled nerves…
How do you spend those evenings?
The one rule my partner and I follow every evening

I work from home every day (obviously, you just landed on my workplace, this blog), and my fiance works as a driving instructor. He is all day out in traffic and gets paid to teach someone how not to drive through people (if possible).
You can only imagine the amount of stress he gets through every day (rollercoasters are nothing compared to spending an hour with someone who treats the breaks in the car like it’s a bug that has to be crushed into pieces).
Every day he comes home stressed out and extremely tired. The last thing he needs me to do is start showering him with my problems, revelations, ideas, and worries.
On the other hand, I spend my days at home, and I rarely talk to someone (except to our dog and myself, none of those are reliable conversation partners). When I see him, the first thing I want to do is share my ideas, frustrations, worries, and piled-up energy from the day.
Yet, what I do is give him some peace. I would let him zone out for a bit (unless it’s something urgent we should talk about), and then I would go ahead and shower him with whatever information he doesn’t need to know, but I feel like he does.
So, below you will see ten more thoughtful and relationship-saving things happy couples do before they go to sleep.
10 Things Happy Couples Do Before They Go To Sleep
1. They talk about the day ahead

Life can get boring sometimes. You wake up, go to work, come back home, have dinner and finally go to bed to repeat it all again the next day. However, happy couples never forget to ask each other about their plans for the next day. It might be as simple as “what do you want to have for dinner tomorrow”. People in healthy relationships never forget to catch up with their loved ones before bed.
Bedtime is when you can finally rest from a long day and spend some quality time with your partner. And asking your partner about their plans for the next day shows that you care and support them. If you don’t already have that habit, make sure to incorporate it into your routine. It’s not much but it makes the world of a difference.
2. They express appreciation
Bedtime is when you have the chance to express your appreciation for your partner. What better time to have a heart-to-heart talk than right before you go to sleep.
Saying and hearing “I love you” or “I appreciate you” before falling asleep might increase oxytocin and endorphins in your brain. The same chemicals are released when you eat chocolate, so you can imagine how vital it is (both “I love you!” and chocolate).
It’s especially important to show love and support if one of the people in the relationship has had a hard day. This is when the true value of the partnership comes out.
3. They leave electronics out of it
Happy couples switch their phones on silent mode and put them away. There’s nothing more annoying than trying to reconnect with your partner while they’re on their phone.
Just think about it – how often do you spend time with your partner during the day but you’re both totally distracted by your phone? For most of us, it’s more often than not. So don’t let it be a part of your bedtime routine as well.
Create an agreement that limits electronics before bedtime. This way you can focus on what’s really important – spending a few precious minutes together before you go to sleep.
4. They forget about work

Just like social media, it’s a no-go to take your work laptop with you to bed – it has no place there. This is the time when you should forget about your daily woes and just be there in that moment with your partner.
Happy couples even avoid talking about work before they go to bed. Yes, it’s okay do to it at the dinner table or during the day, but they avoid talking about work right before they go to sleep.
If there’s something that’s bothering one of them they try to save all the financial troubles and work commitments for breakfast tomorrow. There are so many better things to discuss before bedtime.
5. They make plans for the future
How do you define if a relationship is happy? The answer is simple – if you share the same view about the future. If you have the same goals and objectives about how you want your relationship to turn out to be, then you’re in it for the long term. And there isn’t a better time to daydream together than right before you go to sleep.
Happy couples know that bedtime is their personal and private time, where they can express how they really feel about their future together. Maybe they’re talking about getting married soon. Or if they’re not that further down the road, maybe they’re planning to introduce each other to their families?
Making plans about the future is a way to make sure that you’re on the same page. And happy couples usually do it before they go to sleep.
6. They resolve their issues
Having a disagreement or an argument every now and then is completely normal for any relationship. If you haven’t fought already with your partner, I’m sorry to break it to you, but you will eventually do it. That’s not necessarily a bad thing – we’re all human, we’re different and it’s normal to feel irritated every now and then.
What’s important is to resolve your issues before you go to sleep because that’s what happy couples do. I know for a fact that you shouldn’t go to bed angry. This may have a negative impact on the day ahead and not talking things through is a bad idea.
7. They don’t forget cuddles and kisses

One of the most romantic things happy couples do before going to sleep is to express physical appreciation to one another. Cuddling for a few minutes is relaxing and evokes positive emotions.
You’d think that most couples do it, but that’s not true. Some of them actually do need a reminder from time to time. That’s because not everybody needs to give or receive physical affection. That doesn’t mean they’re not loving, they’re just less of a physical being.
However, kissing and snuggling before falling asleep, even for a few minutes increases intimacy and helps to build trust. It affects our bodies in a psychological way. After all “There is only one happiness in this life, to love and be loved.”
8. They keep kids (or pets) out of their bedroom
I know that it might sound impossible for some couples, but keeping pets and children out of your bedroom is important. I have a dog and a cat, I love them more than anything, but I’ve noticed that when my partner and I let them stay in bed we get way less sleep than usual. My cat especially can’t sleep through the whole night and often disturbs my sleep.
The same goes for couples with children. Your bedroom should be your private space and your little ones must know that. You need to have a space where you and your partner to share and it’s only for the two of you. And the only time you can let your children sleep in your bed is when they have a nightmare or when they’re sick. And that’s exactly what happy couples do.
9. They give each other a massage
Nighttime massage is key to peaceful sleep. And a good massage feels like a love letter to your entire body. When couples give each other a massage before bedtime they form deeper connections both physically and emotionally. It’s a way to show selfless love and affection, and it fosters trust, improves communication, and expresses vulnerability.
10. They try to keep the same routine
Going to bed at the same time as your partner and building a routine as a team is crucial for the relationship. It could be fun as well – make a small ritual out of it. Happy couples follow the same bedtime routine almost every day which helps them sleep better.
The reason for that is that when you repeat the same action together your brain receives a signal of the approaching bedtime and prepares your body for sleep. This will help you sleep better and it will make your relationship more intimate and trustworthy.
Conclusion to Things Happy Couple Do Before Sleep
Spending your evenings in a quality way is not just a nice option you always have. It is indeed your responsibility and privilege to nurture the good you’ve managed to create with your loved one. How do you spend your evenings? What do you do to stay together and keep the happy vibes flowing around you?
