7 Ways To Improve Your Relationship With Your Partner

1. Apologize

It’s important to recognize and apologize for hurtful behaviors as soon as we realize that they were bad for the other person.

Sometimes this takes a while because our ego won’t allow us to admit we were wrong, and sometimes we are simply too stubborn to confess our faults. No matter what your thoughts on the topic are, it’s good to talk about mistakes you’ve made and be able to apologize for them asap.

No one is perfect, and everyone is prone to mistakes. Your partner will appreciate it if you take his feelings into account and recognize your wrongdoings. It’s important to be sincere with your apology and show him that you are willing to learn from your mistake.

Don’t wait too long for that conversation to happen – it might send your loved one the wrong message and might make things even worse. Remember that he is likely to quickly forgive you, the same way you would if he messed up and asked for a do-over. Don’t be too harsh in your relationship – after all, you are both on the same team.

2. Communicate

Even if you and your partner have been together for ages, the importance of communication always remains persistent.

Proper communication is key to better understanding each other and ensuring that you both are on the same page. Interestingly enough, improving communication has a lot to do with active listening.

By becoming a better listener and actually hearing what your boyfriend has to say, you become better at understanding where he is coming from and why he feels the way he does. This is why, the next time you two argue, try to hear him out and understand his point of view without judging him or being biased.

Another way of bettering communication is, of course, through talking. As time passes, we take many things for granted, which means we stop sharing as much with our partner as we fall into a routine. Try to notice little things that change about your partner and ask him about them – a prompt like this has the potential to turn into a lengthy and rich conversation.

3. Keep the spark alive

quality time together

While on the topic of taking each other for granted, make sure you regularly schedule some quality time to spend together.

If you want your relationship to thrive and your bond to remain strong over time, regular date nights are a must. Life can get very busy, and we all have plenty of obligations to juggle. This makes it even more imperative to dedicate time to your relationship.

If you let the fun stuff go, like going to the movies, having a fancy dinner together, or enjoying a new hobby, your relationship will quickly start to disintegrate.

4. Find out what your love language is

Here’s a fun fact for you two: you have your love languages.

“Love languages” is a term coined by Gary Chapman in his 1992 book The Five Love Languages: How to Express Heartfelt Commitment to Your Mate.

According to Chapman, there are five ways that romantic partners express and experience love. It can be a good idea to take one of the many online tests together with your partner and then compare notes.

In my case, my prevalent love languages are acts of service and quality time. This means I feel most loved when my partner does little chores for me, takes care of me when I am sick, and we get to spend quality time together. My partner also enjoys the quality time, as well as physical touch. Given the latter, I try to show him more affection by giving him cuddles, kisses, holding hands, and getting more physical.

5. Enjoy and allow alone time

When it comes to tending to a relationship, most people are naturally more focused on spending more quality time together.

However, this isn’t always the answer to making a relationship work. Everyone needs alone time once in a while, and a good partner will always honor that need. One of the signs of a healthy relationship is when both parties have individual interests they pursue and enjoy unobstructed.

Wanting to do everything together and be involved in every aspect of your partner’s life can come across as obnoxious and annoying.

This is why I urge you to encourage your partner to go fishing with the boys, and while he is out to do that, you can focus on some of your own interests. I guarantee you that after spending some time apart, you will both come back feeling more enthusiastic about the relationship, with plenty of new experiences to talk about with each other.

6. Support each other

No one is confident 100% of the time – if someone tells you they are, they are probably lying.

It’s very likely that you and your partner have separate dreams that you’re focused on and trying to achieve. When chasing one’s dream, the road is often rocky, disappointing, with many ups and downs along the way. Supporting each other is essential as to institute that feeling of support and belief.

I recently experienced a bit of a career crisis, where I decided to quit my daytime job and focus entirely on my writing. This transition was terrifying to me, mainly because of how much uncertainty it brings to the table.

However, my boyfriend was such a rock for me through this process – he never stopped believing in me and supporting me. When I was down, he would always find a way to make me smile and get me back up on my feet.

After about a month, I had found several clients to work with and was finally satisfied with my career choice. This wouldn’t have happened at all if it wasn’t for my boyfriend – and I am truly grateful for his belief in my capabilities.

7. Be vulnerable

This one ties in nicely with my previous point.

Whenever you are feeling down or upset, try opening up to your partner and sharing what is bothering you instead of bottling it all down.

Being vulnerable in front of each other lays the groundwork for real intimacy and allows you or your partner to offer the support needed to get you out of that dark mental state. When you allow your partner to see you in a less than stellar light, this reminds them that you are human and helps them connect with you more.

Never forget – no one is perfect, and if you can’t open up to your partner when it really matters, you will never be able to have a fulfilling and happy relationship.

What if He Is Pulling Away?

What if your boyfriend is acting weird lately, and you struggle to find the reasons why he is pulling away from you? Should you just leave things as they are and see where it goes? Or should you ask him what’s going on and risk ruining whatever good state you are wobbling on right now?

None of those!

To improve your relationship, you need to know what’s missing on his side and can you/should you provide it.

And to know what’s missing, you need to dig deeper into men’s psychology. What are the things a man really sees in you? What is it that he values first? What does he need from you?
