15 Ways You Know Your Relationship Will Last Forever
1. You have similar goals for the future
The future of a relationship isn’t determined by what you’ve been through together or what you’re going through now. It’s all about how you view your future together.
Here’s an example. I had a 6-year relationship with a guy and it was seemingly going alright. However, at some point, I was thinking about taking things to the next level. I wanted to get married and have kids. At the same time, he didn’t feel like getting married (ever), and having kids was not one of his goals. So we eventually broke up regardless of the fact that we were getting along for the most part.
What I’m trying to say is your relationship only has potential if you agree on how you want your future to look.

2. You’re honest with each other
Some might argue that communication is the most important element in a relationship. And it’s true. We don’t live in the 1950s anymore when talking about your feelings was taboo. Maintaining healthy communication isn’t just about sharing what you want to eat for dinner or what movie you want to watch. It’s about talking honestly about your feelings and decisions. And if you’re able to do that you know that your relationship will last forever.
3. You’re intimate with each other
We all know that it can get hard to keep it interesting in bed when you have a long-term relationship. That’s why you should constantly make efforts to keep the intimacy between the two of you. After all, if you don’t do the deed every once in a while it would be like living with your best friend. And where’s the fun in that?
4. He makes compromises
If there’s one thing you and your partner should learn it’s how to compromise. Even if you have similar personalities there are always some things you won’t agree on. And when that happens you should know when to back off. Compromising is the building block of any healthy relationship. Besides, if you really love each other it shouldn’t be a problem to compromise if it makes your partner happy.
5. He supports you
Supporting each other is essential in a relationship. Even when life gets hard you need to know that he’s your pillar of support. If he listens to you, offers help, and reassures you then you know that you’ve got a keeper. And it also goes the other way around – be there for him in times of need. Also, support him during his happiest moments. That’s how you build trust in each other and that’s how you know your relationship is going to last.
6. He respects you
How do you know if he respects you? Well, if he understands that you’re a whole person, with your own opinions and personality, and if he recognizes your differences but loves you despite them, then he truly respects you. But if you notice that for him you’re just a mean to an end, makes fun of you, and undermines your opinions, then I’m sorry to be the one to tell you thing you should probably dump him – he has no respect for you at all.
7. He’s considerate of your boundaries
Keeping boundaries in a relationship will help you maintain individuality, a sense of identity, and personal space. It’s also important to communicate what you consider healthy boundaries from the very beginning of the relationship. The reason for that is that what works for one person might not be so ideal for your partner. Everyone’s got their own space and comfort levels.
So how do you know that you’ll have a lifetime relationship with him? Create and maintain boundaries.
8. You feel comfortable with each other
Your relationship should feel like a safe space. Just like your best friend’s living room or your favorite dinner spot in town you should feel totally comfortable when you’re with your partner. This is a sign of a long-lasting relationship. Lack of comfort can hold you back from growing as a couple, while it can also lead to larger problems down the road.
But being comfortable with someone isn’t always something you can work on. Your vibes either match or they don’t. And usually, that shows when you first start dating. So if you want to know how to tell if your relationship is good, pay attention to if you feel comfortable in his presence.
9. You don’t compete with each other
A healthy amount of competition isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It can keep the passion, novelty, and fun in your relationship. However one of the main factors that can lead to a toxic relationship is being too competitive. So instead of operating as a team people in competitive relationships are in a constant battle of who’s better than the other.
If you feel like you have to keep up with your partner and you ultimately feel insecure when you’re unable to do so, then your relationship won’t last forever.
10. He accepts you the way you are
Every person has flaws and nobody’s perfect. You know your relationship will last forever if he supports you through your growth without challenging you to change yourself for him. It’s hard for some men to recognize the importance of acceptance. That usually happens for two reasons – they’re either too busy looking for perfection or they’re focusing on their partner’s flaws.
If you feel like you’re being judged then make him understand that he has to acknowledge you for who you are. Maybe he’s in love with the idea of a perfect relationship and not with the actual person that you are. If that’s the case you might want to reconsider your relationship.
11. You’re not afraid to ask for help
A long-lasting relationship is built on trust, especially when we’re the most vulnerable. So when it comes to love and commitment you should expect everything including help. And you shouldn’t be afraid to ask for help. Asking for help can be hard, especially if you have high standards for yourself. But taking advantage of the fact that you have the support of your partner is a sign of a good relationship.
12. You forgive each other
We all make mistakes and sometimes we hurt the people that we love the most. After all, we’re just human. But when that happens it’s important to forgive each other. If he’s able to forgive (and forget) about all the times you’ve hurt him unintentionally, then he’s a keeper.
Of course, I’m not implying that your actions should be left with no consequences. I’m simply suggesting that apologizing when you’ve made a mistake shouldn’t be left unrecognized.
13. Your gut feeling tells you he’s the one
Women are incredibly intuitive. Sometimes things might be going well with a guy but there’s just something that doesn’t feel right. In that case, trust your gut feeling. Usually, our instincts know better than our minds. Also, oftentimes when you meet your lifelong partner you know it right away. Some call it love at first sight, I call it gut feeling.
14. You fight fair
Arguments are bound to happen in relationships. Sooner or later you’ll have a disagreement about something (if you haven’t already). When that happens it’s important to fight fair. So the way you handle conflict tells a lot about your relationship. If he treats you with respect regardless of the fact that he’s angry at you then you have a healthy relationship. Blame-game and name-calling are all signs of unfair fighting. If he treats you unfairly during fights then don’t waste your time with him.
15. You can still do things on your own
Maintaining your sense of self while you’re in a romantic relationship is important not only on a personal level but also for the partnership itself. A person can lose their sense of individuality when their relationship becomes the top priority. So if he allows you to practice self-love and self-care on your own then he respects the fact that you’re still a separate person out of the relationship. And that’s how you know that your relationship isn’t just a fling and it will probably last forever.
